The CAI Conference on Community Safety & Security” for condo communities boasts an esteemed panel of speakers from the legal, public, and private sectors. These experts bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to address security and safety concerns within condo communities.

The legal sector speakers share insights on relevant laws and regulations, offering guidance on navigating legal challenges related to community safety. Public sector speakers provide valuable perspectives on community policing, crime prevention strategies, and collaboration with local authorities. Private sector professionals specializing in security offer innovative solutions and best practices to enhance safety measures within condo communities. The diverse expertise of these panelists ensures a comprehensive and well-rounded approach to addressing security and safety concerns, empowering condo communities to actively improve their security infrastructure.

Benjamin Tabesh is the Founder, Director, & Facilitator of Condor Security. Serving safety and Security for Over 20 Years.  He is passionate about learning, developing new concepts, and application of best practices for the betterment of safety and security in all communities we serve. 

 

 


Bradley Chaplick is the Team Leader of the Condominium Law Practice Group at Levitt Di Lella Duggan & Chaplick LLP. Bradley assists his condominium clients with enforcement of condominium rules and regulations and collection of unpaid common expenses. He also acts as a chairperson for condominium meetings and provides advice and written opinions to condominium boards of directors. In addition to his work as a lawyer, Bradley also provides mediation and arbitration services as a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario.

 

Alex Goldstein, CPP, CISSO, ABCP, graduated with Honors from York University, where he pursued a double major in Criminology and History. He holds a Certified Protection Professional Certification from ASIS International and a Certified Information Systems Security Officer Certification from the United States Committee on National Security Systems. He has over 18 years of progressive experience in both the Canadian public sector and private security industries. Certificates held by Alex include the Associate Business Continuity Professional Designation from DRI Canada, Cyber Security Diploma from Lighthouse Labs, Business Continuity Planning Review (BCP 501) from DRI Canada, CISSO (Certified Information Systems Security Officer) from Mile2/CNSS, CPP (Certified Protection Professional) from ASIS International, and various others covering incident management, lean methodology, crime prevention, and licensing credentials from the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services.

 


Mike worked with the Toronto Police Serive for 34 years and retired in 2022 as a detective. Mike worked in many roles from general uniform duties, Community Response Units, investigated many cases involving general criminal matters and major Sexual Assaults, Child Pornography, Human Trafficking, Frauds, Professional Standards (Internal Officer Investigations). Since 2022 Mike has been with the TDWBIA as a Director of Safety and Security.

Sam Soltani is a highly accomplished professional with extensive experience in the engineering and consulting fields. As the founder and president of Trace Consulting Group Ltd. (TFG) as of 2022, Sam has demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise in managing all aspects of day-to-day operations for both companies. As a LEED certified professional engineer and designated consultant by PEO, Sam has been instrumental in successfully leading and consulting on numerous high-scale projects across a wide range of industries, including multi-residential, commercial, retail, and industrial sectors. With his wealth of knowledge and hands-on approach, he has proven to be a valuable asset to his clients. He regularly volunteers his services to various committees and boards, ensuring that he remains at the forefront of the industry and continues to provide valuable insights and contributions. In 2022, Sam was honored to be included in the prestigious list of the top 100 Canadian professionals, a recognition of his exceptional skills and contributions to his field.

 Jack Bolland is a manager in the Environment & Climate Division of City of Toronto. He is a sustainability and renewable energy professional with experience developing, managing, and delivering programs in the public sector in Canada and private/NGO sector across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Responsible for thought leadership and developing best-in-class programs in the areas of sustainable development, community energy planning, cleantech deployment and the strategic development of low-carbon thermal energy networks. Through the development of business models, financing, technical, and policy frameworks alongside holistic stakeholder engagement, the division serves to deliver on the TransformTO goal of Zero Emission New Development and Resilient Neighborhoods by 2030 and a Net Zero City by 2040.


As a director of energy management at FirstService Energy for Canada, including Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, Rob works with our clients to identify and develop a cost-effective strategy tailored to their unique needs and energy goals. Some of the projects Rob helps facilitate include LED lighting, controls, EV charging and electricity price optimization. Joining FirstService Energy, Rob brings 15 years of energy management experience working directly with multi-unit residential owners. Rob is an engineer, holds a master’s in business, and is a Certified Energy Manager. 

 

Brent Moore is a mechanical engineer and energy modeller with experience in the design and simulation of sustainable building systems.  Brent applies low carbon and renewable energy technologies to achieve valuable energy and carbon savings across a wide variety of projects.  He strives to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge green technology to deliver great solutions for his clients.  Brent has been simulating buildings for nearly 10 years. He is experienced in modeling energy use, thermal comfort, indoor air movement, and emissions production for new construction and existing building projects in multiple jurisdictions across North America. This experience has afforded him the ability to identify areas of improvement accurately and efficiently for all types of building designs and retrofits. Working on many net-zero developments and integrating future climate scenarios as part of these building simulations has Brent ready to take on human civilization’s need for a low-carbon built environment.

Hot Topic Trio – Trending Fire Code Violations, Reducing False Alarms & New S1001 Standards

Topic #01: Common and Trending Fire Code Violations in Condos 

In this session, we’ll delve into fire prevention principles and the identification of fire code violations. Our speaker will highlight the importance of complying with fire codes and regulations, discussing common violations encountered by fire prevention officers. Gain valuable insights into identifying and rectifying potential fire hazards, ultimately enhancing the safety of our communities.

Speaker: Vince Tripp, CD – President, Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers Association

Vince is a retired Canadian Army Vehicle Technician Sergeant. He served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for 22 years, with deployments to Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. Vince worked many roles as a soldier, including vehicle technician, instructor, maintenance shop supervisor and even for a short time out of trade as a reporter with Army News. After retiring Vince attended Durham College for their Fire and Life Safety Technician program. He graduated from this program with a perfect 5.0 GPA and was awarded the Durham College Medal as the highest-ranking graduate in any two-year post-secondary program.  After college he worked as a volunteer Fire Prevention Officer and then as a CFAA Fire Alarm Technician before being hired as a Fire Inspector with Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services. Vince is involved with Fire Code enforcement, Building Code compliance for new construction, and Fire investigations. Vince was first elected to the OMFPOA Executive in 2018 as a Director and became President in 2023.

Speaker: Sarah Hinchcliffe, P.Eng. ITC – Associate Director, Trace Consulting Group


Sarah has extensive experience as an engineer and project manager, responsible for coordinating all aspects of design, tendering, and construction administration of mechanical systems for new buildings, tenant improvements and retrofit projects for commercial, retail, residential and institutional sectors. She specializes in investigations and retrofit applications. Sarah is also experienced in assessment and reporting on the condition of mechanical and electrical infrastructure for residential high-rise, low-rise, and townhouses for condominium and non-profit clients, as well as condition assessments for commercial and industrial properties.

Speaker: Jason Reid – Senior Advisor, National Life Safety Group

Jason Reid has been an avid student and practitioner of Fire Safety & Emergency Management for over 20 years and has been recognized across Canada for innovative best practices in the application and successful integration of Fire, Safety & Emergency Management in buildings and facilities here in Canada and across the globe, protecting critical infrastructure, high-rise buildings, mass venue and high-risk facilities. For the last 10 years, Jason has led the Fire & Emergency Management consulting program with National Life Safety Group, and consults daily on risk management and response. Jason actively volunteers his time in the promotion of Fire, Safety & Emergency Management, serving as Director and Committee Chair for numerous industry associations and working groups and was recently awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award (Government of Canada) for 2022, and the Ontario Volunteer Service Award Issued by Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade Ontario.

 

Tackling Tragedy & Trauma: Legal and Therapeutic Guidance

Delving into one of the least discussed topics in condominiums, this session will navigate circumstances related to death. Our panelists will explore the legalities, ethics and emotions of handling one life’s most fragile experience while balancing our work obligations.

Detailing the varying legal ramifications, developing communication strategies and discussing therapeutic guidance, this session is designed to assist property management professionals with preliminary tools tackling trauma in a condominium setting.

Moderator: Tanisha Jhuman
Speakers: Ashley Latendresse & Yulia Pesin

Tanisha Jhuman has been in the condominium property management industry since 2012. Seven of these years were focused on working in new construction; liaising with Residents, Developers and Builders to create a sense of community and property enhancements within condominiums. Through the course of her career, she has delved into various shared facility, reciprocal and cost sharing agreements. Tanisha launched her career in property management in a mixed-use hotel condominium facility and branched out to managing a variety of high rise, low rise, townhouse, and commercial condominiums. With a background in communications, she is committed to simplifying the complexities of condominiums to guide communities to timely and value driven solutions. Currently, Tanisha is the Vice President of Client Relations at Icon Property Management.

Ashley is a Registered Psychotherapist who recently completed her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree at Yorkville University. She previously attended Trent University to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and subsequently completed a specialization in Addictions and Mental Health at Durham College. Ashley has spent the past eight months at Toronto Neurofeedback and Psychotherapy Centre, completing her clinical practicum. To deepen her learnings and experience, she has volunteered for over three years at Distress Centre Durham as a Crisis Line Responder and mentor for incoming volunteers. She has also worked as a Residential Counsellor in a high-support transitional housing program. In addition, Ashley has completed extensive supplementary training focused on theories and models of behaviour change and suicide prevention and intervention to support her role.

Yulia is an avid litigator who passionately advocates on her clients’ behalf. She works collaboratively with her clients and adopts a conciliatory approach to ensure that her clients’ interests always prevail. Yulia received a double B.A. (Hons.) in History and Psychology from York University in 2008, graduating with summa cum laude distinctions. She earned her J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2011. Yulia was called to the Bar in 2012. Prior to joining Deo Condominium Lawyers, Yulia was an associate lawyer with two prominent Toronto insurance defence litigation firms. She has gained extensive experience as a civil litigator, including acting as co-counsel on two Ontario Superior Court jury trials. Yulia was a co-editor for the 2017 LexisNexis Canada Inc. publication of the Ontario Insurance Law & Commentary textbook and has authored several publications in Claims Canada journal. Yulia also volunteers for the OBA/OJEN Ontario Secondary School Mock Trial Program as a mock trial judge. More recently, Yulia received recognition from the International Advisory Experts (IAE) for her expertise in condominium law. Yulia practices civil litigation with a primary focus on condominium law and insurance coverage disputes. Yulia also engages in solicitor-side condominium work including, corporate governance and compliance matters, negotiation and drafting of contracts, and preparation of by-laws and rules.
